Many things grow in the garden that were never sown there.  ~Thomas Fuller, Gnomologia, 1732

Yes, I, Heather Paich, actually got up at SEVEN-THIRTY on a Saturday morning to do yardwork. It was not necessarily what I wanted to do, but it's been looking like the Congo out there lately. Rather than have the neighbors burn me in effigy I thought I ( Read more... )

Well, I WISH I'd never done it. Sheesh. I am NOT a gardener.

There is a fairly simple way to rid yourself of the skunk, assuming you get your butt out of bed early enough...

Really? Do tell....it's not the first time he's invaded my yard. I had a groundhog once, and I was told to throw mothballs under the shed. It seemed to work.

1) Find all of the entrances under the shed. Brick or stone up all but the most used one.
2) Late afternoon dust the ground around the entrance with a white powder: flour, cornstarch, etc. It has to be heavy enough for you to see footprints and their direction (IN/OUT)
3) Check b4 dawn to see if there are any footprints in or out. If there aren't any footprints and no serious skunk funk, toss in mothballs and close up the last hole. If there are footprints going in by time you check, you will have to iterate this sequence.

Skunks are nocturnal and wandering territorial. They have several dens and move between them on a regular basis. So you are waiting for your skunk to leave b4 closing up shop.

Immurement was a great plot device in Firestorm, but is not the desired outcome under your garden shed.

Unfortunately, I can't get to the side or back of the shed, as there are fences on two sides. To narrow for a human, but certainly big enough for the skunk. And the shed is open on all sides - it sits up on wood risers and the entire thing is open.

I know I can't do a standard trap, and I'd rather not kill it. I'm not sure, but I may have to just live with the little stinker. Dang.

I lucked out yesterday - it was still around 70F when I did my work. I hate doing outside work, so it was perfect weather for me. I agree, though - summer is for the birds. And other animals that like heat. I'm not one of them.

Bring on the snow! :)

I was up early, but it's been raining here all day so there was no yardwork for me to do. I did however have house work to do which I promptly ignored and took myself instead to see Charlie St Cloud at the theater.

I hate skunks. I get the whole smelling thing....but why does it have to linger for 200 years?? LOL

Ooh, rain. I like rainy days. Gives me a good excuse to be lazy, hah!

I think Skunky and I will be all right, as long as we ignore each other. He definitely seems to be geared toward 'flight'. :D
