It was the best of icons, it was the worst of icons

I was called out by casett for failing to choose my least and most fave icons that I made during 2010 after I sort of badgered her to choose her faves...and she's right. So here are my picks:

Thanks so much for doing this - it really helps me understand how you think when you make icons and what you consider good.

One thing I did notice - all your LF icons have a dull, not vibrant coloring and all your MF are much more dynamic - either in coloring or in the case of b&w in contrast. That you try to express a concept in your best icons is very revealing (ie. I just slap on some text and hope for the best). In most of your LF there seems to be one element missing (other than the Walking Dead one of the park zombie that just didn't work for you in any way on review).

Your top 5 MF all have outstanding composition that helps to tell your story but I think your best composition of the year is the SWAK icon - so many design elements including the banner background, the 3D nature, the text and the textures all came together.

You are such an awesome icon maker! I praise and exalt your skill (even when you think you have failed). Thanks!!!!

You're quite welcome. I LOVE it when other makers talk about their work & what they think worked/failed ( ... )

Most of these (Star Wars and C&H excepted) are for fandoms I don't do, but I enjoy your icons. I should pester you to make icons in fandoms I use, or pb icons for actors I use, or something.

I may need to steal some more of them, obviously.

Yes, you should! I like making icons for friends. Let me know what you want -- if you have specific caps you want used that's even better -- and I'll do the best I can for you.

"fandoms I use", heh, look at me needing more caffeine.

My current "thing" is Inception. I have HD caps but mostly I'm thinning them down to make pb icons of my boy Cillian Murphy. I can hunt for where I found them and point you at them. I'm also all over BBC Sherlock and, of course, Doctor Who (mostly Four, but also the new guy, Eleven).

I would be shocked if cap_it doesn't have plenty of Who and Sherlock, and I'm pretty sure that's where I found Inception caps.

ETA: And I should say, of course, thank you!

And, aha, found where I got Blu-Ray screencaps of Inception: http://community.livejournal.com/homeofthenutty/253141.html

Ooo! Thank you for this post and for the background on how/why you do what you do. I love peeking into the minds of y'all genius-types, just to see what makes you tick.

Yanno, considering that I crop & recolor caps and you make original art, I'm not seeing how you need insight into "genius-types like me." But the kind words are appreciated nonetheless. :D

Wow, thanks for writing all of that up. It's always really interesting to hear people talking about the process they went through for specific icons. I love all of your MF icons. The Vader one, especially stands out. Love the colouring and composition.

And all your other MFs, you have so many amazing icons. I really love this one:

I love hearing others' process. Bad on me for forgetting that.

I LOVE that icon! It isn't anything like what I set out to make but was a happy accident. That's how a lot of my faves are... :D

I also love when iconmakers write up their thoughts on their icons!

With your LFs, I think some of the problem might be the font choice, in particular the Leia and zombie (?) icons. And with your MFs, you have great background use and colours (although I'm a little disappointed by the MF O'Neill icon since I think you could do more with the colours). The font choice in the 'GRR face' icon is brilliantly chosen.

I loved your end-of-LIMS analysis; I'm thinking of stealing that, too, as it's an interesting look back over a limited set of loosely related icons.

The font choices are definitely wrong. I really hate the zombie one. Viscerally hate it. Which is perhaps perfect for a zombie icon. ;) O'Neill is conservatively colored for certain. Having him in his Class As in the SGC...made more cautious with coloring? It's such a strict society that I didn't want the coloring to be too out there. Does that make sense?

I love the Grr Face icon. It's so rare to get Hobbes by himself in s meaningful way...and I have lots of use for my Grr Face. :D
