3 in one: His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman because it is dreamy, fantastic, full of other worlds and wonderful creatures, science, heartbreak, death, angels, witches, armoured bears, animals as souls, and it really attacks religion. All this and its marketed as "children's" literature, eventhough you will find it in lots of different sections of bookshops. I do notknow one person who has not loved it -the only bad reviews i've seen have been by christians.

Everything Is Illuminated by Jonathan Safran Foer Trumpet by Jackie Kay The Time-Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger (I probably recommended this to you already because I recommend it to everyone because it's the most amazing book ever, but I don't know if you have read it yet or not)
that third one was also already on my to-read list, but i'd forgotten. thanks for the reminder. (: also, what are the other two about/ what makes them so good? (if you can convey this without giving anything crucial away.)

Pattern Recognition by William Gibson.
And The Fan Man by William Kotzwinkle.
I don't know if you've already read the latter two so maybe nevermind.
