I am going to begin my journal focusing on the imagery of fire in "Little Gidding". I was amazed at how Eliot put it so beautifully, "to be redeemed from fire by fire" and while it is perhaps confusing to some, to religious people, it makes perfect sense. I've read The Waste Land before, and each time I read it, it reminds me of 1984. I think it is just the utter ruin of London, and area, with such surreal descriptions, and the hopelessness expressed in the text. I love Elizabeth Barrett Browning! Her poetry, at least to me, is so true in my experiences of love, the never ending, unquenchable thirst for more, and the joys it can bring! I love the story of her and Robert Browning, though we don't know all the details, it is fun to leave it to their poetry and my imagination to determine their experiences ( Read more... )

So i was really dreading last class, because i hate Wordsworth! Then by the end of tutorial, i loved him! What a change! I liked the Elegy in the Country Churchyard, Thomas Gray reminds me of John Milton, in the sense that the words are so cleverly crafted and beautifully written, and just to amaze the reader even further, its a sensical story, it isn't that hard to read if one focuses on what the words are saying! Personally, i didn't really enjoy the poetry we studied this week. I wasn't really drawn into the poetry by Swift, and while it is amusing to see such crude literature come from someone from that period in history, the poem was so drawn out, and frankly, quite boring!
