As a son w/ a father myself, I can't imagine what it's like to get that kind of perspective on one's dad. To me, just projecting myself into your shoes for a second, it feels delightful. Makes me feel a rather sentimental yearning to get that sort of snapshot of my father's world at a young age. (Though that could go depressing too, since his youth was forked repeatedly by fatherhood quite early.)
That's a great idea for a gift, but maybe your search for equipment will make it a father's day one? I guess that's a veiled suggestion. I'd probably try to make something like that a FD gift instead of Christmas.

I think it's so endearing to think of your parents in a band together, like we should take all those gay marriage bills down in elections and put up ones about how you have to be in a band together to get married.
