receptionists and paper flowers

i wish i was a receptionist sitting at her desk filing papers and typing on a keyboard answering phones with nice paper flowers in a glass vase by the filing cabinet RATHER than sitting on a computer feeling stressed from two 2000 word papers due today (which i will not be able to hand in on time ( Read more... )

M'dear, I hope you find a nice low key place to be a receptionist. I absolutely adore my job, but I am so tired, and so stressed out a lot of the time. I'm the receptionist to the majority of employees and the public, personal secretary to all managers, I'm in charge of so much and at times its hard to get any work at all of your own done because its your job to drop everything you're doing whenever anyone needs anything at all. Also, dressing up everyday is tiring. Not to mention that damn phone never stops ringing with internal AND external calls at the same time.

Not to discourage you, that's just my industry, I work in the car business, which is quite high strung. I once had a part time reception job at night. It was A LOT different. While I was working on my degree, I worked a night shift when the phone wasn't busy and there was a bit of filing and time for homework. :) Also, I often wonder what a more office related reception job would be like.

wow! i think i may have romanticized it a little!
you handle so much, i really admire that. it must be tough at times to cater for everyone and do everything at once.

i was thinking of applying for a few receptionist jobs at doctor's surgeries in the summer holidays, hopefully that's not too stressful.

i'm trying to get a job as a receptionist but it's way hard!
i've sat behind the desk at my parents' office but it gets boring after a while.

my parents have informed me that being a receptionist would be ummmm tedious and quite routine, but i don't mind as long as it gets busy sometimes otherwise i get really really bored and lose interest.

it's still good to work at your parents' place =)

I used to have that fantasy too but now I realise that I'd be bored shitless doing any receptionist job full time. Plus, it's dead end career-wise.

i guess all jobs become routine after awhile, but i know you what you mean.

i don't mind that it's dead-end, i'd just like a job i can love. although i'm not entirely sure i'd love reception work as a career though (as yet).
all the same, pre-enrollment for 2010 starts soon so i can elect my social work subjects for next year! (which would hopefully beat the arts aspect) =)

Oh I know exactly what you mean, by that. :/
Sometimes, I too, wish I had some "easy" job, where I come home in the evening and just chill and let the day behind me. In the weekends no need to learn, just read books you love and have fun.

but that's not.

ahh if only the world was like that right?
having a nice job, coming home to a nice cup of tea (or coffee) and relaxing rather than worrying about exams and essays!!!

maybe we'll have that when we get older....!

You're not alone, trust me. College life is just crap sometimes, with the deadlines and class attendances - nasty for a serial procrastinator like myself! I understand the burnout feeling, going through a little at the moment - finals in two weeks but I can't bring myself to work at all! Also I'm on scholarship which makes it worse. Anyways, every job has its ugly side. I've known receptionists who get so busy managing everything, especially in small, minimally staffed offices.

your right, uni has definitely taken its toll on me.
i was never an incredibly motivated student but to have four assignments due in one week is absolutely ludicrous!!

wow, good luck on your finals! study hard! sending over some *positive vibes*

i guess i romanticized reception work a little, i guess it can be hard and rushed and stressful, but sometimes, like yesterday i'd like give anything to be out of college and doing something better or more productive - maybe something i don't have to worry about schoolwork, anything but schoolwork.
