there is nothing for it. vladimir nabokov's name literally means "world-ruler of the sideways people." i realized this in a terrible burst today in class when one of his characters fell "nabok" parenthetically

Whoa! I feel like "world-ruler of the sideways people" is a pretty good characterization of him. (So is the anagram "vivid, amoral knob," if you're feeling harsher.)
no it's more boring: vlad is an old slavic root which has spawned "vlast," power, "vladet," to own, to be in power over, and many others. mir means world and community.
