In Mexican tradition, today is the day that the spirits of the dead are welcomed home. It's their day of remembrance, and they are thrown a party. They are celebrated, candles are lit, and the dead are toasted.

They have made a party out of something that couldn't be more serious, and to me, this is genius, magic. And appropriate.

I went to the Dia de los Muertos event at Shakers last night, and when I looked at the altar- La Offrenda, I very nearly burst into tears. John Peel died yesterday. He was responsible in part for the rise of such bands as The Cure, The Smiths, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Joy Division, and The Clash, and by all accounts remained a proponent of new music until the very end.

I saw this show a few nights ago called Extreme Halloween. This couple that carves pumpkins was featured, and these are no ordinary jack o'lanterns.
