Going from a place that has a high of 15 F to the land of perpetual sun and 80 F is a bit disorienting! That said, pleasant weather does make me feel more motivated. Well, picking it up as you go along is (imho) by far the most efficient way of learning a programming language. That being said, if you've programmed before, you'll likely need at least about a week where a lot of your effort is going into internalizing the new language rather than actively being productive at whatever it is you're working on. Probably a bit less time if you get to code from scratch and probably a bit more time if you're given horribly obfuscated legacy code to deal with. If you've never programmed before in anything I would assume it would take a fair bit longer and you'd probably benefit by studying up beforehand and making yourself a miniproject to try it out on.
Just my two cents from somebody who got into the whole coding thing fairly late in the game...

i ditto this.

letting the person know that while you havne't programmed before you're planning on learning some stuff before hand might hlep.
