I've been brewing a collection of random aspects of new mom-hood that I thought I'd share with the interested. So here's a list of things I didn't expect, that no one ever told me (why oh why?) or that I was told and never properly believed... ( in no particular order, the good and the ugly.... )

There's a fine line between neato biology and run-of-the-mill scifi.

Me: "Oh is that a picture of little Daniel?"
Daniel: "Ummm... I'm not sure"
Me: "It's gotta be little Daniel. He's cute and looks exactly like your dad."
Daniel: "I dunno... Oh yeah, that's from Halloween. That must be the year I dressed up as a nerd!"

... [yes, that was year in the singular]

it grates on my ears when people talk about "discovering" a computational method. You can formulate it, develop it, extend it, but you don't discover it like you would an actual fact about the world. That is all.

Yay! No more quals! My 60-min talk turned into 42 min as predicted via me talking too fast. And the profs weren't too mean in the questions and basically I just got patted on the head and told to get up off my rear and start writing stuff up. We found a new apartment! Going to be all grownup and live off-campus -- all of about a 5 minute walk from where we currently are :-)
