A fan's dilemma.

An unexpected side effect of reading hockey fic is that I've found myself missing the time when I was a sports fan and followed multiple football codes closely. I'm thinking about paying attention again, because being a sports fan is fun, but it turns out I really can't go back to the football code I grew up with. I'm still too angry about the ( Read more... )

Alas yes, it is really only on Foxtel, which is a gigantic pain now that I no longer live in a dwelling with such things. Hadn't thought that far through it, but its the only thing I do follow to recommend :)

I'm thinking I might need to bite the Foxtel sports package bullet.

Thanks to littlerhymes, especially this post, I've been casually following the New York Knicks. They have a break-out player this season, Jeremy Lin, who has one of those Made For TV Movie stories -- Harvard grad, passed over for the draft, went through a few teams, and then through a fluke convergence of events, got his shot and blew everybody out of the water. He's a great player, nice guy, and incredibly humble as well.

I haven't watched sports for a decade+ so it's been a fun little diversion. We'll see how long the shine lasts for me.

Also, hi. :)

Hi. Nice to see you around again.

I'll check the post out. As a netball player, I always struggled to get into basketball. But then I do enjoy being peripherally interested in most sports, so maybe it'll take this time :)

Hello! And, um, yes, I am loving the NBA right now. :D One of the great things about it is how deep the mainstream fandom is, the further I go the more blogs and experts and forums and columns and opinions I find. There is no end! There is no horizon!

The other sport I would suggest is tennis (of course). A few things about tennis which set it a little apart from the team sports mentioned up-page:
* It is truly international, which is a nice contrast to the Australian, Euro or US centrism
* It has gender parity. Sure, the women's game gets dissed a lot and sometimes I get mad at the coverage, but it is far FAR more gender balanced than NBA-WNBA or cricket or any of the footballs. There is enough coverage of the WTA that you could ignore the ATP altogether, if you wanted.
* The season = the whole year. There is honestly not a single month where I am bored or short of news.
* It is a beautiful, princely, pure sport filled with loldorable, ridiculous characters and thrilling, amazing narratives. <-- completely objective opinion

Tennis. I used to love tennis, and went to White City a few times (when it was still called White City).

I'm finding the getting back into sport a bit harder than I expected; apparently being busier cuts into fannish time...
