• Labor institute: The governor vetoed $3.8 million from the budget passed by the Legislature for the Institute for Labor and Employment. The governor's veto message said the funding “was provided on a one-time basis in the 2004 Budget Act, and these reductions are needed to help bring ongoing expenditures in line with existing resources.”
it was 70% of cal's labor center funding-- eliminated. huh.
yes, I know (sigh) about this. It's just that this other thing is so direct and explicit an attempt to control what speakers (and educators) can SAY to students. As if "providing a balance" is even remotely related to what the fuckers who engineered this desire. As if you cannot even have a perspective without making sure "all" perspectives are represented. As if "all" opinions even NEED to be heard in such a context. It's just infuriating.
Also I am glad we got to hang out yesterday! For some reason I really cannot get out of my mind the image of your mom sitting in the "available" position at coffee shops in her town. I want MY mom to do that. It's really too bad she never will.
