I mentioned the socks you'd knitted this morning to the physical therapist, and how perfect they look. She knits, and seems to think socks would be very hard. Are they?

Knitting socks isn't very hard. At first I was intimidated because socks seemed so structured and knitting with such small yarn and fine stitches would mean that there's little room for error. That is, until I finally learned visually how a sock is knitted - those written instructions that I got were way too confusing. These sites helped me a lot:
Socks 101 was my first and favourite, great photos and simple instructions
The First Socks from a Japanese website that has English translations, great step by step illustrations
Sock Knitting Tips deals more with knitting socks on circulars but is still useful, esp with the photos ( ... )

I'm dying to learn how to knit and you are really inspiring me -- not that I have any extra time on my hands, but when I do...

How did you learn?

Hrm... I learned from my father, of all people. My mom mostly crocheted. I learned on these red plastic knitting needles with some pink wool, I remember that. I didn't make anything other than stockinette scarfs until my mom got a knitting and crocheting book with awesome detailed photographs. I can't remember the name of the book, but a search on Amazon has some current titles that look good from a visual point of view - for me, it was important that the photographs were of actual hands knitting, not just some illustration (weird). These look good: Teach Yourself Visually Knitting, American Knitter Learn to Knit (DVD), or jump in and buy a kit to make simple projects like these from Suss and Cup of Yarn (I saw these at a craft show once, the yarn is purty and doesn't need a lot of fancy stitch work to make a scarf that's wearable ( ... )
