Parental Failure

Jul 17, 2010 12:30

Since Tuesday, we have been visited by our 11 year old nephew, Hunter. I must say that while it's going well and he is having fun...I have serious doubts about one of two things:

1. Either his parents have taught him NOTHING
2. I suck as a parent.

Let me state why I think this.

Are you that bad )

I read this post moments after reading this. At least there are a few kids who get it!

EXACTLY! And couldn't get anyone to understand and it just made me sad. So I talked about it with xzaxza and he agreed with my nephew. The entire situation was just very very very upsetting...but I'm over it.

$1, yes. $100 ... /sigh/ ... It's sort of stealing ... and I'm pretty sure illegal to keep money you find. I run into issues like this with Theo all the time - where we just completely disagree on something. He thinks cutting in line is smart because why should he waste an hour of his life? Umm ... then why do we have lines?

AHHH...line cutting pisses me off!!! Why should you waste your time? Because everyone else did...if you didn't want to wait in line arrive earlier!

Oof. That's a tough one to be in.

I agree with you; the tot should have turned the money in to the store.

I have turned money in. What bothered me more was the thought that the person who dropped it wasn't rich and this was like the money they had to buy specific things and now they are out that $100.

But what good would it have done to go into the store that you weren't even sure someone came out of or went into and turn in $100 which nobody is going to claim so the cashier could just take it?? Again, weigh the scenario. Find a bag of strapped bills, sure, the Brink driver probably lost it so turn it in.

What if it was $1 or $5,000? Where do you draw the line? I will say again, if there was a reasonable suspicion that the person was nearby and you could find them then you should make an effort to do so. Otherwise that thing is floating around on the ground. It sucks that someone dropped it - like you dropped your $20 yesterday and blamed me - but they should have been more careful.

Cash - dollar bills - has no owner. There is no way to prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that the money you see belongs to a certain person. Maybe next time you should at least donate it or just bury it if it makes you feel better.

On the one hand...you turn in the money and it could go to the person you give it to, and not the person who lost it.

On the other hand...that person could come back looking for it.

Lost money in a public place is a hard one.

I understand the dilemma. That's why you turn it into a manager and make sure someone else is there. There is a chance they will take it...but I would rather they take it and feel like shit. Even a nice comment about the $100 to a DM would strike up a convo where the manager could be investigated if they figured out he just took the money.

I think all in all I was looking to see if he would be willing to not be selfish and do the right thing. Yes, $100 is a lot for a kid, but I would feel better being told I was a good person then being told, "That may be someone's money for the week for gas, food and stuff....karma will come back."

I don't know...I didn't go into that last speech because he's a kid and he knew I was disappointed because he was quiet the entire car ride home and couldn't look at me.

You should have taught him two lessons in one. You should have taken his money and turned it teaching;

1.) Turn in stuff you found.
2.) The money in your hand often belongs to someone else before you have a chance to spend it.

I would rather have him echoing the Tea Party than the current administration.

I agree, I will have an update about that situation in the next journal entry.

We had a LOVLEY discussion about politics that was really bi-partisan and didn't slam one over the other. We all decided (well myself) that I like Obama...but there are things I do not enjoy (Bail Outs...the unfixable economy that is not turning around). And not all Tea Party are crazy...I think there is a legitimate cause in there somewhere buried behind the racist and hypocritical bullshit that the media pays attention to to get ratings.

That's good to hear. Although I do have to say there is little racism in the Tea Party. It's amazing how many prominent african americans came out and spoke out against the NAACP when they called the Tea Party racist. It is quite amazing where the current state of politics is at.
