Two scenarios.

1) Person finds money at ATM after seeing woman walk away and into the bank. Woman brings money in and says "I think this may belong to that woman." I check, sure enough it does. She thought the machine didn't give her money.

2) Bill is laying in a parking lot. Nobody around. There's really no recourse. If you take it into the nearest store you are setting yourself up for ANYONE to claim it which would mean they were stealing it potentially. Had you seen someone walking away from that area then you would be obligated to check but otherwise you have no obligation to do anything except think you are lucky.

The world is not black and white. Each situation requires thought and the answers may always be different. The deal with the $100 in the saving account is to teach him that if he has some patience and waits he will walk away with 3x the money instead of blowing the $100 now.

I agree with you. I would not expect the kid to give up the $100 found on the ground, unless there was someone in the immediate area who clearly indicated that they had lost the money.

There also isn't any saying that the store clerk(s)/manager is lawful good and will make sure it goes into the right hands and not their pocket for scenario one. There are many variables in place that make it difficult to find the person who lost that $100 bill. Even making a vague post of "FOUND: Money in Petsmart Parking Lot", someone can guess that it was $100.

I can see how it feels wrong, because it's easy to imagine the person who lost it, but it is incredibly difficult to find the right person as money is so anonymous.

Oh, I think I read the previous entry too fast. The money was in the parking lot? Eh ... that's a little tougher. It could have come from anywhere ...
