trekkies -> trekkers -> just about everybody

I am the old school sort of -- started in 1987 with the first season of TNG -- Trekkie who grew up on the shows, entered fandom through Trek fandom, entered sci-fi through Trek sci-fi, and so on and so forth, I've seen every episode of every series (except "Enterprise") about four point four zillion times and am in fact one of those people who ( Read more... )

As a person who loves the series (Perhaps doesn't know them as well as you) let me say this: Go see it. It's soooo worth it. The trekkie in you will leap for joy and dance around the room.

In spring of 2008 I got to the convention center in San Francisco at 9 am and sat without moving in one chair until 2 pm so I could be among the first people to see the first clips from the X-Files movie at Wondercon. I don't have to tell you how much X-Files is in my blood (possibly I have a third 'X' chromosome at this point, haha). And yet on that Friday night, I suddenly told A. to go to the theater without me. That was a year ago. Still haven't seen it.

Sometimes we're just not ready to go back again, you know? Especially when you're having to deal with literally a new generation of fans, jeez.

It's amazing. That being said, if you want to wait for it to come out on DVD so you can watch it on your small screen, no one would hold it against you.

I actually think that's it. I just need to watch it in the privacy of my own home. I think it's the audience I'm afraid of?

Oh, fannish psychotherapy, pls to be bringing me the canon-protecting drugs?

And I have no doubt the movie's amazing. I already pre-love it. But STILL.

I have no doubt I'll love it, also that it's awesome. I just have to figure out why I feel so... OPPRESSED by it. Because that's just super dumb of me, is what.

As for the new fandom, my sense is that I'll read stuff by folks I know from "proper" Trek fandom before I'm ready to read stuff by reboot converts? But then, the Brits went through this with all us latter-day Doctor Whovians, and there are many among them who've been able to accept the RTD Who into their hearts right along with Classic Who. I'll try to follow their example.

I'd say nothing is wrong with you and you just have a better self preservation instinct than I do because if I could erase those two hours from my brain....well, I'd be a much happier person.

But then I'm in a super teeny-tiny fannish minority with that opinion.

(and, god, I hear you. One of my earliest tv memories was around age four sitting at the dining room table and eating while watching Star Trek:TOS because one of my parents had rolled our little black and white tv into the dining room because THIS WAS STAR TREK. And I still remember sitting down a year later to watch the TNG pilot and for seven years Saturday in our house was Star Trek and pizza and I swear by age 14 I had the omnipedia memorized and was toying with learning Klingon and could instantly recite for you every episode of TNG - title, timeline, plot, details. Trek gets in your blood.)
