Sounds like you're making head way. Just take one section at a time and clean it out. It's hard to convince parents they need to down size, just bring her one box and help her go through it, maybe make a donate pile so she doesn't feel her items are worthless. Someone could use them..

We Goodwill or Freecycle anything that is still usable. A lot of her stuff she never took care of. That stuff we pitch just to get it out of our hair sooner. I usually go through her stuff first and separate out what I know should go, then I take her the rest and have her whittle it down more. If I take it to her first, nothing will go. I used to pitch stuff every time she would go away on vacation. Did that for decades. She NEVER missed any of it. After the big closet clean of last year however, she finally missed something. One of her many spare purses. We had Goodwilled all but one extra.
