Have you considered debt counseling? These folks (Consumer Credit Counseling Service) might be able to help you pull it off. Quick summary of what are/do:

- non-profit
- state licensed
- free budgeting/debt counseling
- nominal fee for a plan where they negotiate with your creditors to lower monthly payments in return for your commitment to repay through the agency.

Debt counseling is a good idea if you've gotten too deep or at least just to call and sort things out. There are a bunch of good agencies out there - but if you go this route, look for one with a good rating by the better business bureau and some history. As a caveat some plans won't let you have active useable credit cards while you're on them, or will let you keep one open for emergencies.

If its a short term problem - you may want to call your credit card companies to get an extension. It sounds like they lowered the rate on the one and you just didn't notice. The credit card companies are getting aggressive about certain things right now because big changes are coming in what they are allowed by law, and thus they're tightening things while still allowed. you may not get anywhere by calling, but its a good start

I don't think much of this advice is applicable in their situation, since the primary issue is unforeseen expenses on a limited income.

Though a better organization system for incoming bills and a good mail triage plan might help ;)
