A cracky sequel to
this fic but I think it could stand alone.
They were the last two to leave. Frequently Reid lingered to keep his co-workers company, not wanting to totally flaunt his ability to finish his reports earlier than them, using the time to finish other´s reports (today´s theft was from Prentiss´ inbox) and to write his mother or work on his theses. On a normal day he would leave with third person who left, but today he had a reason to stay behind.
He´d been back for twenty five work days, ten thereof where he´d been on desk duty, and one case had taken them to Arizona and back. Hotch had been true to his words, nothing had changed, except in Reid´s mind everything had changed.
Firstly he noticed that Hotch stopped touching him. He realized the change on his first day back (eight minutes after stepping into the BAU). In any case, Hotch would come out and greet whoever was back from sick leave, acknowledging the person with a handshake or a pat on the back and kind words. Reid always got a hand on his shoulder with a small squeeze accompanied by a bright smile that made his stomach warm and his smile wider. But that day all he got was a simple: “Good to have you back,” with a short nod as Hotch passed them on his way to the kitchen. It had stung, even though Reid nodded and tried to shrug it off he couldn´t help but make a new folder in his Hotch-Database (-> Memories -> Avoidance) and store it there. Although Hotch had drawn back on the touching after Haley died, Hotch had still patted his back or shoulder and sometimes touched his forearm to get his attention. But after the Lightman-case, Hotch had stopped all together and Reid missed it. Even though he wasn´t a really a touchy person (an after effect from his High school years, he had self analyzed) Hotch´s touch had always been friendly, warm and welcoming.
Secondly, Hotch stopped pairing them together, at all, and tried to manipulate the situation so they were never alone in the same room (two work related issues that really should be analyzed separately but he was saving time). Reid noticed that on the first day in Arizona. After the briefing on the plane, he sent Reid to the coroner office with Prentiss to examine the four bodies, which was nothing out of the ordinary, but when they gathered for dinner and review at the station, Hotch had walked out of the room after everyone was gone, heading for the kitchen for coffee. Reid knew it was a cover as he stared at the half full thermos that had been brought in for them, thirty two minutes ago.
Thirdly, they stopped talking, not on cases or about cases but about all the other things they discussed. It had started one week and two days after Gideon left, while everyone was still on the edge over Strauss. Hotch had called him to his office to discuss the “…irresolution hanging in the air” as Hotch had put it and they had talked. After that, they met on the average of one point five times a month (over fifty two month period) (usually when Hotch saw the edges of his inbox peek over the files), they would sit over a cup of coffee or tea, arguing about definitions of words or psychological terms or the beauty of physics, solar-systems or weather abnormalities, (Hotch hated thunderstorms but loved the rain (as long as he didn´t have to be in it)), each meeting lasting on the average of fifty nine minutes (for the same time-period). For a while after Haley´s death, the conversations had been more of a spiritual kind and Hotch had asked him about his opinion on the effects on children who were brought up in one parent household until it returned to their earlier topics.
It had been after one of these conversations (talking about sexual sadist´s preferences and the odds of a homosexual male targeting other males) that Reid (sitting in the metro on his way home drawing a detailed star map of Hercules and the surrounding stars) discovered that Hotch was indeed bisexual. He let the though role over in his mind for two minutes and fifty three seconds until he decided that it made Hotch a better profiler. Another conversations months later (one hundred thirty two days, exactly) that Reid discovered Hotch ‘liked’ him by finally connecting Hotch´s patterned behavior (while he was eating mint-chocolate ice-cream and watching a rerun of CSI (Sweet Jane (S7E13)). He really hadn´t figured out if he liked Grissom or Langston better, but Langston was growing on him and he was glad Sara was back). The realization struck in his head, the spoon stopped midway to his mouth and he completely missed the rest of the episode as he stared at the ceiling for nineteen minutes while the idea was disintegrated and synthesized with evidence from the Hotch-Database, the fingers moving and twirling the spoon swiftly and securely between themselves as the ice-cream melted in the bucked (until his thighs temperature dropped to approximately thirty two degrees Celsius, he noted later) and a blob of ice-cream colored his tie (which was unfortunate since he´d only bought it eighty seven days prior, and he had to throw it out).
On the twentieth minute he dropped the spoon and jumped from the couch, almost tumbling over the bucket of ice-cream with his action as he realized he didn´t mind the fact that Hotch ‘liked’ him. That thought alone needed more examination with insert of statistics from the Spencer Reid-profile. This led to a thirty two hour marathon of reading medical (mostly on human thermodynamics), psychological text and adding and changing the Spencer Reid-profile along with Aaron Hotchner-profile, with the new information and coming with the only conclusion of he, ---Spencer Reid--- loved Aaron Hotchner.
Now, four years later, Reid had grown accustom to the Hotch Likes Me-thought and as time went by the fact had never been denied or acknowledged until this case. So far, Reid had just brought out the thought every now and then, when he was secure in the privacy of his own home and his self esteem was feeling a bit under the weather (which was to approximately eight point four hours a month, on the average (over twelve month period) and depending on case load), it helped him to know that Hotch ---Hotch of all people--- wanted him the same way he wanted Hotch. They both knew that Reid was not the type of person to use this to his personal advantage and he was certainly not the one to take the first step.
Reid had hoped to have one of their conversations shortly after he´d returned (statistically he was most likely to get desired result by staying behind), especially since Hotch hadn´t showed up for the whole six weeks of recovery after their short talk in the hospital. He missed those talks more than the touching or the working together. He knew (after quick analyst of the problems compared to past behavior and the Aaron Hotchner-profile) Hotch was shutting him out and that it couldn´t go on or it would affect the team, one way or the other. It was only a matter of time until the team figured it out (if they hadn´t already, but he thought he´d been fairly good about playing along) and call Hotch on it.
Reid put the files on Prentiss´ table for her to review, change if desired and/or sign them off (which she did in ninety four point three percent times (to Morgan´s sixty eight percent and Hotch´s hundred percent in the nineteen times that Reid had actually managed to snatch a file from his desk (Hotch had given him a stern look when Hotch discovered those files but never reprimanded him for it)) but always after reading over and there was the eighty eight percent chance that she would buy him a large double frappuccino with extra whipped cream for the work). He turned off his desk lamp and looked up at the office-window. The blinds were open and he could see the Unit Chief standing by the window, his right arm across the abdomen and the hand fingers of the left worrying the upper lip, deep in thought.
Making his way up the office in quiet steps, Reid walked through the open door and put his hands in his pocket. He just watched for a few seconds, filing the image in the Hotch-Database (-> Memories -> Analyze later), until he quietly made his presence known by clearing his throat. Hotch swiftly turned around at the sound and Reid smiled even if the warm in his stomach was spreading up his torso and making him feel uncomfortable hot.
“Reid, did you need something?”
“Ahh, yeah, I need to talk to you about… ummm...,” he looked down, “your behavior.”
Hotch frowned and silence filled the room.
“You´re avoiding me and if I noticed it´s only a matter of time until the team figures it out,” Reid blurted out (out of the list, he had decided this was the safest one to start with).
Hotch kept staring at him obviously pondering is answer until he carefully folded his hands in front of him. “You´re right and I´m sorry,” he said softly with is his voice he used on victims and their families.
Reid closed his eyes briefly (this was the least desirable behavior, he needed a new strategy). “You don´t have to apologies, given the nature and the circumstances denial, or in your case avoidance, is the first step to acceptance that… umm… the situation… will not changed.”
Hotch´s mouth twitched as he tried to hold back a smile. “You´re applying Kübler-Ross model to the… situation?”
Reid pressed his lips together to hide his relief of having steered the conversation into an easier path but he knew Hotch could see right through him. “Of course there are more facts to be taken into consideration,” he said quietly to the floor before raising his head and looked at the other man.
They remained eye contact before Hotch turned away and rubbed his hand over his forehead. “With your given facts, nature and circumstances what do you hope the outcome to be?”
“A scientist can never favor one outco…” Reid started but slammed his mouth shut when Hotch raised his hand in a silencing manner.
“That is not what I asked,” he stated simply.
Reid thought the question over. Hotch was the only one who gave him the opportunity to give his opinions, asked what he liked and wanted (Hotch knew he hated thunderstorms and loved the air after it rained). “I hope,” he started carefully, “that when all necessary steps have been taken and all the facts analyzed, that everything will be resolved.”
Hotch considered his words for a forty one second before smiling and prompted Reid to smile back. “That is a good outcome,” Hotch said.
Reid nodded and knew he´d gotten his most favorable outcome, he´d gotten Hotch back.
-Fin.
A/N: If you ask me, this is just one big CHAOS but does anyone really know how Reid´s mind works?"
