This was wonderful. I didn't actually think you'd go there, at all, but it really worked that you did. All the little things fit so well - that Laura and Bill switched only some aspects of their life but remained essentially the same characters we love, that in this Universe the old friends are Bill and Ellen instead of Bill and Saul, that Saul and Ellen, and Bill and Laura, are always soulmates regardless of time period, circumstances, or place... beautifully done, really. Though I like to think that, once in a while, in some of their reincarnations, Laura and Bill get a full, happy lifetime together. Just occasionally.

I like to believe that in the many times this happened, that there were things that remained constant, helping them realize, at least subconsciously, that this was something they'd get a chance at again until they got it right. And I also like to think they got to be happy together in many of these tries.

All that wonderful sex and angsty, fraktastic crack, and yet the core of this story is as heartbreaking as their story in the series. It's just as difficult to see this happen in reverse, to Bill instead of Laura, but really to both of them each time.

I especially loved this reversal with Ellen:

Walking over to the bag on the small table across the room, for the first time Laura was overcome by the depth of Bill's friendship with Ellen. She felt no jealousy or distrust now, merely a sense of envy that the other woman had been given the opportunity to spend so many more years with him.

This was just a wonderful read, you guys.

I've been trying to figure out what about this ending has me so upset, and I think it's because in the series and in most fic, Laura is the one who dies and we have to deal with a broken Bill. Plus, I'll never read a "not-enough-time" fic in the same way again--there was so much they didn't get to share with each other in the 7 days they spent knowing each other (omg you guys are evil), making this an echo of the series on overdrive.

I wasn't at all expecting to have to deal with Bill's death and like...actual sadness in a cruise-ship AU, but I'm so glad this wasn't just all fluff and games, which is what I find hard about AUs in the first place.

There's always one at funerals right? YEEEEAAAAAHHHH!

No bait-and-switch here. We have truly... Killed Bill. And it didn't even take Pei Wei's Five Point Palm Exploding Heart Technique.

I've seen a couple people pretty upset about Laura being the one left and you're pointing out why. Leaving Laura to deal with the aftermath of such a hurried yet destined romance is pretty brutal. She's as shattered as Bill was in Daybreak but it might be worse because she had no time to prepare. So yes, all this.

Alas, we did. When icedteainthebag first suggested it, I was shocked too but it fits the story in an unconventional way, I think. Seeing Laura left alone after Bill's sudden death is hard, but I'm happy that we were able to surprise you, even with the warning and all.
