But I just won the monthly gift-certificate drawing at Swetman's Furniture (Amish and Amish-y handmade stuff) and lo! it's for twice the usual amount because of the holidays.  I'm feeling the warm little glow of "hmm, I could buy something ..."

We're starting to put up Christmas decorations; the new house is so different that we have to figure things out from scratch.  Which is both fun & confusing; and also one box of decorations appears to have wandered off and the CDs have disappeared.  But, hey ( Read more... )

I got back to LibraryThing tonight (after a hiatus to prepare for and clean up after our very enjoyable La Belle show last weekend), and we're now up to 3,019 -- tied for #671 among current members.  The cleanup trail being created is beginning to be a little discouraging; in the interests of just getting titles into the list I'm accepting whatever ( Read more... )

We're still in the process of switching over to new doctors, and I went up to the Big City for my first interview with my new ophthalmologist.  We'd been with our previous guy for so long ... I'd forgotten what a drawn-out process it is to do a baseline eye exam.  She shone lots of lights into my eyes and looked at me with a variety of powerful ( Read more... )

I never knew that egg production was a function of sunlight.  Apparently chickens lay less often when the days are shorter.  Now that the equinox is passed, their schedule will be slowing down till they lay ( Read more... )

The weather is starting to hint that autumn is coming, which in our neck of the woods means it hasn't broken 80 for several days.  We're finally getting rain, and a lot of plants are recovering their green, which makes it feel like a belated spring.  At the farm, the cherry tomatoes are still going strong but most of the full-size tomatoes are on ( Read more... )
