The bear apparently hit way farther forward than I thought -- the outer right running light had been popped from its socket.  I guess the impact flexed the soft bumper.  B was able to snap the light right back in -- everything appears intact, including the catches that hold it, and it lights on command.

I ran out after lunch (and yet another in my infinite menu of conference calls) to pick up this week's CSA box.  Most of my travel is on VA route 6.  Between Schuyler & Scottsville it's a well-maintained, paved 2-lane road.  It's mostly wooded, with patches of farmland, and over most of the part that I drive the posted speed limit is 55 mph ( Read more... )

The tomatoes are definitely in.  Last week's beefsteak was underwhelming -- big & red, but not luscious.  This week's is Soldaki, a Russian heirloom; we'll see.  The cherry tomatoes, though, are fantastic.  Last week was a bag of yellows; this week is a bag of reds (pretty large, almost ping-pong ball size) and yellows (two kinds, a smallish true- ( Read more... )

It's summer, and the box shows it: zucchini large and small, crookneck squash, onions, cucumbers, a BIG bunch of basil (more pesto! I love pesto), a lunch bag o' tomatillos, surprisingly late potatoes, a big red tomato and a bag of gorgeous, sweet yellow cherry tomatoes.

So the answer is no, I can't possibly eat a week's worth of produce all by myself.

I still have half the eight-ball and most of the potatoes, plus the zucchini and cucumber.  The tomatillo-avocado soup sounded a lot better on paper than it was in the bowl.  The purple beans were disappointingly mature (i.e. starchy), but the green beans were tender ( Read more... )

Last week we were both out of town, so my favorite brother Eric picked up the box.  I was out of town the week before, so only saw what was left when I got home (the potatoes were unexpectedly wonderful, 2 kinds too).  This week and next, B is at Pennsic, so I'm going to be a veggie-eating fool.
