It looks as though we're into summer crops now for sure.  Or maybe not so much.  The lettuce is officially ended, but the other greens are hanging on despite the highly variable weather recently, and may continue for another couple of weeks.  The garden & sugar snap peas are over, but the snow peas seem to be hard at it.  The radishes are barely ( Read more... )

Week 8 already!  I'm still thinking "it's too early" for a lot of the stuff that comes in during July.  Time to rewire my reflexes.

Rumors of broccoli death appear to have been slightly exaggerated; they grow several varieties and one (Bellstar) did come through.  We've got a midsize bag of that, mixed with a couple of cauliflowers of unknown ( Read more... )

I've got space in the new kitchen which can be dedicated to a spice rack.  I need to place about 6 dozen spices, which right now are mostly in 2 sizes of Penzey's jars.  This is my big chance to have an attractive, well-organized way to store them.  There appear to be 3 basic ways I can go: countertop, shelves, or magnetic.

Alas, no more strawberries ... the heat has done for them, and also for the broccoli and cauliflower.  The farm newsletter says "Some of the cauliflower heads, no more than an inch or two in diameter, literally cooked on the stem; they are dried out and browned to a crisp -- on some of those extremely hot days, you cold actually smell the plants ( Read more... )

The changeable weather (mid-90's Saturday with t'storms, mid-70's yesterday and sunny) doesn't seem to have unsettled production as much as the farmers thought it might -- this week's box is an almost exact duplicate of last week's -- including the strawberries!
