Since the History Channel flubbed this one up, I can't resist to say it myself...

Hell was originally in Anglo-Saxon belief. Hel was a goddess of the dead, and the underworld wasn't a place of punishment, it was just a place where the dead went if they didn't go to Valhalla (or the Anglo-Saxon equivalent of Valhalla). Much like the Greeks, Hel was a place you could travel to in order to seek wisdom (if you actually made it back out without becoming dead yourself).

I also find it interesting how Hell is mentioned and referred to in the Bible. Which is to say, not as much as you'd think. And I can only think of one time when it's really referred to as a fiery place of torment. There are references to people being unable to share in the kingdom of God, but not much about the Catholic vision of whips and misery.

Actually, look up sheol and gehenna. The Jews believed in these places. Sheol was simply a place of the dead, and gehenna was kind of like purgatory. Funny, Hades was mentioned as Hell sometimes in the Bible, since it was originally written down in Greek...
