Okay, so this is a rant that's been building up for a while now. Like months.

Yes, the pink coloring that's been going around lately is pretty. I'll even admit that I like it, too, sometimes. As in occasionally, mixed in with other icons that have different colors. You know, like rest of the rainbow/color palette? But I am really, really fucking ( Read more... )

I used to apply the same coloring to every icon in a batch when I started making icons... so I can understand if people with little experience are doing it. What confuses me are people who have been making icons for years and years and still don't really bother whether their favorite coloring actually works with every image they're using or not.

Heh, when I first started, I didn't have a specific coloring, but I had lots of other habits I got into. ;)

But, yeah. I definitely agree with you about people who've around for a while.

And some of those people have made some pretty impressive and creative icons. But all of a sudden everything is pink and looks the same... I just don't get it.

I saw your rant in your journal, and I've been noticing it more ever since.

I've been wondering if I was the only person noticing that! I know I made a small mention of that a while back re: text use, but yeah, it's been bothering me more ever since. It's at the point where it's fucking ridiculous and I'm contemplating changing my style which I shouldn't be doing because it's MY style.

I definitely get what you mean. :\

I've been guilty of feeling like light has to be added to every icon in the past, and I've learned that I can still do that, but just not in the same way (i.e. a light blob or two) every time. Which makes things kind of fun. So weening myself off of that has been a challenge and I'm liking that challenge!

But yes. I basically agree with all of this. :)

Oh, I so know exactly what you mean! Back when I first realized how awesome it was to use light, I over did it sooo much, it was crazy. And then I realized how bad that was. :D

Obviously I live under a rock, I don't think I've ever seen that pink colouring.

But you know, making a post with different colorings and use of texture, that would actually require work and some thought about different styles and composition. And then they couldn't churn out 200 icons a week, and wouldn't that be obstructive on the path to icon maker fame.

I know it's definitely more popular in certain fandoms, like Gossip Girl for one.

LOL, yeah, that is exactly what annoys me so much. Apparently being LJ-famous is that damn important.

I'm totally guilty of the over-use of light on icons. The pinkish coloring has also kind of started making its way into my icons I've noticed. I start wondering when I became a trend!wh0re and when I lost some originality (if I ever had any to begin with) along the way. I agree with this rant and I think that it will maybe help for others abusing this style, along with myself, to really examine the things they make and maybe take a different approach. It's a challenge I think I'm up to. Honestly, I'm surprised you hadn't ranted about this a long time ago, because it's been going on for quite some time. Sorry for the wordy comment. I should just say AGREE and move on. :)

I hope other people will realise eventually that their own style > falling into the trend of the moment, but yeah. And I'm definitely one of those people who don't mention something bothering me until it really starts to piss me off and that's exactly what happened.

I didn't mind the wordy comment. ;)

I just wanted to say that I love your light blobs. Trendy or not, the way you use them is GORGEOUS.

Thank you. Really. :) I've been feeling like complete shit when it comes to my icon making as of late and this comment made me feel a little better. ♥ :)
