Okay, so this is a rant that's been building up for a while now. Like months.

Yes, the pink coloring that's been going around lately is pretty. I'll even admit that I like it, too, sometimes. As in occasionally, mixed in with other icons that have different colors. You know, like rest of the rainbow/color palette? But I am really, really fucking ( Read more... )

I'm totally guilty of a) using the light blob in everything and b) being too inspired by your font recs. Folks Bold, anyone? :)

But I get what you're saying. I made two tutorials and I've seen plenty of icon post where I could see they used the exact tutorial because instead of using the technique, they just copy exactly what I did.

The light blobs are definitely a you thing, though. It's the other people trying to copy you (and myself I guess, even though I am in no way close to as awesome with it as you are) that annoys me. And, lol, yeah, but Folks is definitely less obviously compared to let's say... Fely! Fely is the one that pisses me off the most, because it's completely obvious to me where it came from.

Seriously, not even your picspams are safe.

I love the pink-ish coloring, however not to the same extremes as some people. I use it a lot, because it works well with the pictures I like to icon. I never just use an action, I usually have to color each picture individually to get the right balance of the pink-ness in it. I like natural coloring with just the right places highlighted with the pink.

And that is totally fine.

This pink coloring is the latest trend in iconmaking.
There are some makers who really can work with it, who really create beautiful unique icons.
I think it's just normal that a whole lot of people follows it and creates similar icons with the same coloring. It's like when we had this birdshape textures or this beautiful coloring where the lips are cherryred and the eyes and face blue. It's a tide, the fewest succeed.

The fact that it's a trend, as it so obviously is since I'm not ranting about any particular person, doesn't stop it from annoying me. I've seen a good amount of trends, from the origin of tiny text and the red blob of doom, to the days when overusing textures was considered awesome and when blurring the skin and sharpening the eyes/lips was in style.

It annoys me more, because it's loosely connected to the other two things being copied.

I totally agree on everything.

The saddest part is, the more you use the same coloring & fonts other makers use, the more you get popular. I know icon-making is for fun, and it's not about being popular over lj; but I also see many talented icon makers who don't get the attention they would deserve just because they don't use the same style other 'famous' makers use. Well, that's being original and creative. I second your rant completely. *nods*

And that's what bothers me most about those people. I get the feeling that they're doing it to be popular and not because they find icon making a fun thing to do in their spare time and later post for others who enjoy the.

I mean, there's nothing wrong in pimping/promoting your stuff, but if it's your stuff, it means you can be proud of it because you made it without really thinking if that kind of coloring and/or use of spots of light is the popular way nowadays. As if I could forget that it's not my personal style, once my icons look exactly like tons of other ones due to a tutorial that people are too lazy to use just as an inspiration. MEHHHH.

I keep considering the idea of changing it because I want to get away from it, now that it's all trendy. :\ But yeah, you're definitely right.
