Chrono Trigger: An Existentialist Reading (Part IV)

May 21, 2008 21:14

Magus' Castle and the fall of the reptites are two portions of Chrono Trigger that require a lot of interpretation. For that reason, and because I want to get the whole Zeal arc in one article next time, I'm covering only a short portion of the game this week. Fortunately, Magus's Castle and the return to 65,000,00 are linked thematically; they ( Read more... )

I like how this is turning out.

I think its interesting that Magus' castle is an illusion on so many levels, and in fact there is yet another level of illusion (what are we at now, threefold?) inasmuch as we discover that Magus, the "villain", is in reality attempting to destroy Lavos, and the "heroes" interrupt him at a crucial moment in the process. Ouch!

Nevertheless, this reversal is not total. In 12,000 we find out that despite his efforts to stop Lavos, Magus is not a hero. He, like many of the characters in the game, turns out to be operating from his own set of values that at times runs contrary to that of the other characters, but ultimately seems to be imbued with a sense of humanity (particularly his quest for Schala) that makes it difficult to categorize him as completely anything--which again, seems to be the case for many characters, Azala for one.

Your Existentialist series is simply brilliant, and I look forward to reading the next one. The whole read is extraordinarily apt and, quite frankly, covers any theory I've ever heard or come up with

For example, I had realized the irony in the fate of the three gurus several years back and mentioned it to a friend who was also a great fan of CT. Yesterday, he cited an excerpt from, I assume, one of the next entries in the reading, where you outline the very same theory.

You're every bit as brilliant, if not more so, than the Dream Team themselves. You should have this printed and bound or something!

oh and I hate to be clerical, but...

"In 2300 A.D. he erupts from the earth and ravages the surface of the planet"

It was 1999 AD and I'm sure you're aware, I understand how easy it is to miss things like that when all one sees as the player is 2300 AD.
