I think its interesting that Magus' castle is an illusion on so many levels, and in fact there is yet another level of illusion (what are we at now, threefold?) inasmuch as we discover that Magus, the "villain", is in reality attempting to destroy Lavos, and the "heroes" interrupt him at a crucial moment in the process. Ouch!
Nevertheless, this reversal is not total. In 12,000 we find out that despite his efforts to stop Lavos, Magus is not a hero. He, like many of the characters in the game, turns out to be operating from his own set of values that at times runs contrary to that of the other characters, but ultimately seems to be imbued with a sense of humanity (particularly his quest for Schala) that makes it difficult to categorize him as completely anything--which again, seems to be the case for many characters, Azala for one.

For example, I had realized the irony in the fate of the three gurus several years back and mentioned it to a friend who was also a great fan of CT. Yesterday, he cited an excerpt from, I assume, one of the next entries in the reading, where you outline the very same theory.
