Keeping clutter under control

I am constantly fighting the clutter battle at home...who isn't? Here are a few things that I've been trying to do lately to help:

  • A place for everything. Yes, very cliche but true! I've been trying to work with the clutter - seeing where it tends to pile up, and creating some kind of storage solution in that space. A large basket for work ( Read more... )

I yell out at least once a week "If you haven't touched it all week, throw it out!"

Oh, me too! I think that's why our bedrooms stay cluttered. I will put things on top of dressers instead of just putting them away. And the junk just stays there for days or weeks at a time! It really doesn't take that much longer to just put it where it belongs.

That's exactly what happened to me. The rest of the house looked great because we moved everything into the bedroom and shut the door. It'll now take me ages to dig out of my bedroom.

I am like the opposite of a pack rat - I will throw away ANYTHING, so clutter isn't a huge issue at my house. James is bad about just coming in and dumping his stuff (phones, keys, wallet, badges, etc.) on the kitchen counter, so I got one of those recharging stations to at least keep it all together. It's a good place to keep the camera, too, so that it's always handy if I want to snap pictures of the kids crafting or baking ( ... )

We were given one of those charging station things for Christmas, I just haven't found a good place for it. This one is pretty big, and my kitchen is not! I don't want to use up the little bit of counter space I have with it... Your kitchen is much bigger than mine, though!

I got one for Christmas too and had the same dilemma. I ended up putting it on a small chest that's between the kitchen and dining room, but straight in front of our front door. There are some other decorative things on there, and my cookbooks are displayed in the bottom of it. It looks more functional than pretty, but it doesn't stand out like a sore thumb too much. I'm training my husband to start putting his stuff there...that's the challenge, hehe.

These are all really good ideas.

One small thing that I do is deal with the mail right away when I get home in the evenings. I throw away junk mail, open everything, put bills in my planner to be paid, and file the statements (or at least put them in a pile on the bar to be filed later). That keeps the junk from stacking up.
