Gatz was long. Obscenely long. And after 8 grueling hours of a prose that seemed occasionally humorous, sometimes dreary, often dry, but always brilliant, it seemed to me that all these recent bouts of aspirations and wanderlust are but 'dreams, schemes, frail whims' of a deprived youth that often go awry.
