Traditionally speaking though, ghosts are transparent and black is opaque.

I think I would personally have to lean more towards a wraith of some sort over an ordinary ghost.

They're not all pale and transparent like normal ghosts but at least they're more of a spectral entity rather then a lifeless wisp of smoke?

I was thinking more along the lines of industrial smoke, the thick black stuff that comes out of the factories and rains ash.
