i dont care for a&d as an aid for tattoo healing. i go with pure cocoa butter (you can get it at the pharmacy, by the lotions). its not as sticky, its NOT in a petroleum base, so it actually absorbs into the skin readily. it does a very good job of lubricating the skin and keeping it from drying out, too.
if you go that route, read the label. there are some "cocoa butter lotions" that have a ton more ingredients. you want PURE cocoa butter. the type i get comes in a stick form, in a tube-shaped packaging.
I actually have two forms of cocoa butter and I've used them several times for my other tattoos. I'm just so in love with my wings that I was convinced to use a & d ointment. The silly thing is. I put more on before and after I showered >
Regardless of what you use if you ever end up with clothing stuck to your tattoo don't just pull it off because you do have a risk of pulling off park of your new work. Just get in the shower and wet it down and then take it off once it's fully saturated. My entire back from neck to thighs is done and I've had clothing stuck to parts of my tattoos at various times. It's hard not to since you have to sleep. Oh, and I've healed all my work with just Lubriderm and they've all healed great.
I really should've done that right when that I noticed. I've learned my lesson and luckily my ink is still awesome. Now I just need to figure out how I can normally wear a shirt heh.
Another thing I did while my back was still a little weepy and prone to sticking to my clothes I would slightly crupmple up paper towel and put it under my shirt to hold the shirt off my back. Not really an option if you're out in public but worked great when I was driving or sitting at my desk. Sounds crazy but it worked.
I would NOT suggest a&d, I use non scented dove bar soap and non scented Lubriderm, my tattoos are perfect and in much better condition compared to the ones I used a&d with. Like the other person said, use a little water. And DO NOT wear a bra with metal on it. Really I'd say don't wear one at all but I'm not sure how possible that is for you.
I'm going to just use lubriderm again. Just put some on actually and it's less sticky and more soothing >< I'm pretty flat chested so I can get away without wearing a bra, I have plenty of baggy shirts also.
I just posted my dragon cover up that takes up the majority of my lower back. A friend of my who is a piercer suggested tattoo goo, so I bought the full after care kit. The lotion that came with it is useless. The stuff in the tin works, but like you, my shirt kept sticking to my back! My artist wanted me to sleep the first night with saran wrap on it.
I was at CVS getting migraine meds and just picked up the CVS knock off lubriderm unscented sensitive skin version since it does not have lanolin in it and I'm vegetarian and I stopped having the shirt sticking to the tattoo problem and I'm wearing a tank top right now.
admittedly my second and most recent back tattoo was fairly small but here's my experience: i used Bepanthen ointment from Bayer.
-yes the top did stick to the oily skin every now an then and i had to will myself to not touch anything with the area...including turning in my sleep fully in the air (i don't sleep on my back, but i do switch sides during the night). -yes it did leave an oily (and coloured) mark on the cotton tops i used - yes.......when it started peeling and a big chunk of green scab came off, i almost had a heart attack!!!
but it healed just fine in the end and the colours look perfect now. i've had it for about 2 months and a half now.
I pulled out a bunch of ink on my half sleeve when that happened. What helps is wearing loose clothing and just trying not to lay on it. I've had great experiences with unscented Curel which my artist recommends. It's very moisturizing and gentle.
