The climate in this country is far detached from the German situation 73 years ago. Hyper-inflation, depression, high unemployment the stigma of having just lost the first world war and the placement of enemy troops in their industrial heartland were massive incentives for radical change.

On the "Bush planned it all along" front, I am of the view that after the first Gulf War it was inevitable that troops would be back at a later date as the 'impact' of any subsequent war/skirmish/party/orgy would be dulled. It is still hazy in my mind as to whether or not the invasion would have gone ahead had Saddam Hussein NOT invaded Kuwait. After he had however, it was hunting season on all Iraqi forces and infrastructure - there's nothing like crippling your political enemies whilst only having a tenuous reason in the first place to do so!
