Hello, fine people of lj!

I've been sooo busy lately, but I can't quite pinpoint why.  Hmmm.  Here are a few things worthy of mention :

- I went to see the Body worlds 2 exhibit with my mother when she was here a few weeks ago.  My father and I had discussed it earlier, and while I understand his ethical objections, I think the exhibit is an amazing learning opportunity, not ( Read more... )

Oh yes, Dexter is love.

Unfortunately, no 2nd season until early 2008 at last reports.

Which means no new eps for me for a year. I don't think I can keep the enthusiam up that long, but I'm still looking forward to it.

The good and bad news about Dexter is that each season is based on an entire novel. Which means a very comprehensive story arc. Unfortunately the author has only written two - I think the third one is out this summer - and so I'm guessing they need to pace the production of the show accordingly.

Actually, they've said that they're not following the book for season 2. (The ending of the series and the novel were slightly different, anyway.)

The shepherdess' crook is a must. wwolfe June 6 2007, 19:12:57 UTC
All bridesmaids should be required to carry them. In fact, anyone attending a wedding.

My sister loves "Dexter." I might need to Netflix that, given your seconding that emotion.

Body Worlds sounds remarkable. I wonder how I'd react? I can imagine feeling both awestruck and unsettled. I like what Von Hagens said:

"I hope for the exhibitions to be places of enlightenment and contemplation, even of philosophical and religious self recognition, and open to interpretation regardless of the background and philosophy of life of the viewer."

I've been running like crazy this week at work. My boss is at a conference, so I'm in charge (and drunk with power!!!), and the other assistant director has been off due to her boyfriend's illness. So much busy-ness ( ... )

The exhibit was both unsettling and awe-inspiring. There were quotes from famous philosophers painted on the walls throughout and my mother and I read and discussed them all. I left there with much food for thought.

Drunk with power - I can see you know! Did you get a cane or riding crop that you can thwack on your minions' desks?

How was the movie? Any ghosts?

They've been running a similar exhibition here. thecuckoo June 7 2007, 17:18:28 UTC
But I thought it was too expensive, so I haven't tried to buy tickets. I'm glad you got something out of it.

I recently finished The Known World by Edward P. Jones, which was wonderful, but perhaps a bit long for bookbites.

Somebody brought up Never Let Me Go in a recent WaPo book chat, and I think that might reflect back on The Giver somewhat.

It was expensive here, too, at $25 a ticket, but since my mother was interested too, I decided to splurge. And it was definitely worth it. We spent about two and a half hours there, and it was an interesting to experience it with my mother - I discovered a lot of cool things about her.

Never Let Me Go is actually on my reading list and I think it'd be a great book to discuss.

Hello, lady! I'm so jealous you got to see Body Worlds. When I first heard about it, I thought it was the most amazing thing ever but sadly, I never got the opportunity to go. The only thing I have to shock people with is that one autopsy I attended when I was in college. My macabre quotient is very low.

Isn't Dexter wonderful? The books are quite good as well.

I don't know how I'd feel about an autopsy. Attending one, I mean. I can guess at how I'd feel about having one. It must be interesting yet sad yet fascinating yet gross.

I read the books immediately after seeing the first season, and yeah, I thought they were good. The character of Dexter seems a lot, well, crazier in the book than he does on the show, I find. What do you think? I'm not saying Michael C Hall isn't doing a good job, I imagine they want the tv character to be sympathetic, but in the book they make a *much* bigger deal about the "Dark Passenger."

It's the busy thing. Grim and I don't have a weekend unscheduled until the last weekend in July. Not that we aren't going to be having fun, but yeah. Busy.

And the Body Worlds exhibit looks interesting, and Grim and I discussed going when it was in town but never got to it. Glad you enjoyed.

thecuckoo made a good recommendation for a new book, and you know, we can always extend our deadlines. I mean, we always do anyway - hee.
