Do you play games? Do you like movies?
I do!
Thus, I play the Hollywood Stock Exchange. It costs nothing to play and it's rather fun making predictions about movies. I'm user Iko there. Join up and let me know your user name and we can track each other! What's nice is that it's such a low-pressure game, you can play it four times a year and ( Read more... )

The fact that they're doing American versions of both Life On Mars & State Of Play is just weird.

I think I use to play the Hollywood Stock Exchange years ago. I couldn't remember what my user name was now if I tried.

The American version of Life on Mars looks like a serious train-wreck waiting to happen. They are setting it in 1972, before the title song was released. I can sort of see a remake given that the accents and slang in the original can be a bit tricky for American audiences, but I get the feeling that they aren't being true to the concept/spirit of the original other than the whole "guy gets into an accident and wakes up thirty years earlier and it's a fish-out-of-water story". The original LoM was so much more than that.

A film version of State of Play is intriguing (just because the story is very interesting) but I'm not sure how they will condense the miniseries into a 2-3 hour event. I am excited about the players involved: I think the Norton/Pitt combination could be extremely effective and a success box-office-wise (at the very least, it will get all those folks that made Fight Club a success on DVD out).

I feel the same way about the I, Claudius news. I don't know how one will condense the material into a 2-3 hour film, ( ... )

Hee hee. My partner always said that I am very much a guy, with a guy's sensibilities.

It's something that I've definitely accepted. I'm not particularly empathetic, so that is frustrating to some folks, but I do like how generally drama-free my life and my friends are. I also take some things really literally in conversation; I have a hard time with "take what I mean, not what I say" that some folks do.

A lot of people on my friendslist seem to have this idea of themselves as real mean, uncaring people. You guys say it jokingly (I think), but I just don't get it... you're a sweetie, don't kid yourself! You have plenty of compassion, as I well know from the nice things you've said when I was being a big, bitchy mess. So, what's with the mean girl frontin'?

I guess I equate compassion with empathy. I don't have empathy; I'm definitely not the emotional type (annoyance/irritation/anger are probably my most standard emotions outside the sort of normal state, and even those I don't display frequently). I also think I can be sort of mean, but that's because Mike and I are both social hermits. Bah humbug! All those rotten kids making noise in movie theaters! Poo on them! All those crowds of people in public places! Poo on them! I'm just not a people person. Hehe.

Bear in mind that I can understand when people vent. I have a partner that I vent to all the time (and vice versa). Then we decide that everyone else in the world is Wrong and we hates them. And then we spend an evening watching videos or playing computer games or something fairly non-social. Heh.

Okay, I just finished the first draft of my Martha fic last night, and I have to ask: are you finding her hard to write, or is that just me? I feel like the only real character notes the writers had for her was "she's a medical student" and "she's got a crush on the Doctor," and as a result, Freema's excellent acting notwithstanding, Martha is much more generic than she should be. Not to mention that she has similar speech patterns to Rose, which makes it that much harder (at least for me) to make her sound like herself instead of Generic Companion.

I've essentially given Martha a lot of my own personality. She's definitely a bit bossier than Rose is, unwilling to take no for an answer at times. She does lack a lot of character fromt he series, so it helps that my fic I'm writing is during the Year That Wasn't, where I can give her a survival-focused personality.

Plus, she doesn't have a lot of quirks throughout S3. She doesn't have "signature moves/desires/etc" that could help lift her as a character from Generic Companion. Alas. Maybe that will come out in S4. Both Rose and Donna are easier to write because of those character quirks.
