I love the Cubs like a Tina loved Ike

I checked my email to nonchalantly today to discover this gut retching titled email, "Remember the season with Cubs memorabilia." Yes, there is nothing i want to remember more than a disastrous baseball season that can only be describe as complete impotence. That's like having paying a photographer during my first prostrate exam ( Read more... )

The funny/painful thing about Wood & Prior is that although they've had some problems with injuries they've also played enough that you still can't just write them off; they're just too young and too good. It also happened that they both had their worst injury years (with the exception of Wood in 1999) in the same year, just making things worse for the Cubs. Alright, looking at the numbers a little bit more, it is about time to write off Wood. And they're paying him $12 million no less!

The cubs are paying a 3 million dollar option to pay off Wood. Plus the Cubs are looking to add another $20 millon to the payrole. With the hiring of Pinella, the cubs are making a statement that we can win now.

On the flip side, Aramis Ramirez is looking for a bigger contract and has an option to walk. So the Cubs probably will have holes at 3rd, outfield, and 2 starting pitchers. The cubs could maybe sign a bunch of free agents like Carlos Lee, Zito, and Soriano to make ourselves contenders, but i think that's a long shot. I like our GM Jim Hendry, but i don't know if we should be trying to win now or trying to rebuild. Also, we're talking about signing Wood for cheap to be middle relief.

I'm not a big fan of speculation. You get your hopes up but ultimately management is going to do whatever they're going to do and we all probably don't have much of an idea what that is. You might have an inkling but anything specific is probably a reach.

The Lou Pinella hire totally demonstrates your point. It seemed that everybody and their mother in chicago wanted to Joe Girardi, but GM Hendry went with Sweet Lou. I would've been happy with either, but with Lou i get the added entertainment of his anger antics. I think the media has too much control over teams these days. Look at the average tenure of NFL coaches these days.
