Some time ago, it became clear to me that there are a shocking number of people on this island who lack the ability to read and write properly. Ignoring for a moment the fact that the native language of this place is English anyway, this is nevertheless indicative of a broader lack of culturedness plaguing the community

Japanese I can read. It's English I usually suck at. But does this mean all this time I have been writing and speaking in English and didn't even know it? I thought everyone else was speaking Japanese.. and I didn't even notice a different writing style until you pointed it out.

The island seems to somehow translate everything into English, unless I go out of my way to write it in Japanese. It's all very convenient, I'm sure.
