LJ Idol season 8, Week 16, Re-inventing the wheel

How would you like to eat a nice genetically modified steak? If you live in the United States such a thing could be on its way. The worst part, is that because of U.S. labeling laws, you wouldn’t even know the food you were consuming had been genetically modified ( Read more... )

I worry about this too. I don't eat meat, but I do eat a lot of produce... Monsanto is evil!

Yes, they are. I was happy to get organic lettuce, tomatoes, and carrots today. Of course the fruit I bought was conventional, but I tried.

Honestly, of all the GM food scares the only one which makes sense is the sterile seeds one, that one is really worrying. The rest? We've been modifying genetics since we worked out how to farm crops and breed animals. It's just gotten a lot easier. Besides, how are we going to feed those 7 billion people at this rate?

Our over population problem has certainly led our decisions in agriculture. Still production doesn't seem to be an issue, it's who has control of the food because there are still people starving while the U.S. and other countries have stockpiles of certain things.

I love to buy organic, when I can. These days I can't afford it though.

Thanks. I think a lot of people don't know. Some don't care but a lot don't know. Every now and then my agriculture background comes through and I like to see what I can write based on it.

It is scary what they are doing to make animals we use for food bigger and leaner. They should be forced to put it on the labels. Food and Agriculture are short funded like most services, so you take your life in your hands or health. I'd say go vegan but they're doing strange things with fruits and vegetables, too.

Nicely informative. Well written.

Thanks.

I guess one problem with vegan is that soy is another thing that is largely genetically modified unless you buy organic. It's a common protein source. They haven't gone after other beans that I know of at least. You're right though they have been modifying fruits and veggies on a huge scale.

A commentor above commented that it shouldn't matter because we've been breeding plants and animals for years, but I think a lot of people don't understand that this isn't breeding. Some of the things we do now you couldn't get with regular breeding.
