The first 10 years or was just learning how to be a better fighter... more or less I was on the quest of what is the best fighting style. I bounced from one complete style to another. Then it was small tweaks, then armor changes, then workout styles, then ( Read more... )

I am a big believer in #1. I can not think of anyone that has been successful if they violate #3 either. But it seems to me that #2 is violated by some of the top fighters. The classic example was Osis. He never seemed to thrown less than three shots.

1. Never chase anyone more than three steps, they can get their footing and you will be off balance.
2. Human brains pattern on repeated sequences, throw a pattenr twice and then break it and watch you opponent block the wrong shot.

Those are the two core ones I use.

Thanks, Donnan! I think for a novice/not good fighter, like me, this is particularly helpful advice. One of the things that I like about it is that it's not "muscle memory" or technique advice. There's a lot of stuff that I need to practice at the pell, and there are a lot of technical fighting details I've been introduced to (you step here, then you move like this, and you put your weight here ...). And all of that is necessary and crucial to improving. But the rules you laid out are not technique-specific. They are things you can kind of hold in the back of your head and use no matter how good or bad you are.

I'm going to try to apply them this weekend in the tourney I'm fighting in, and see if they help me and how they help me. Along with all the other things I'm trying to keep in my head. ;=)
