Arcade Fire is from Canada. I least I think so. But intresting choice. Great Gatsby would be awesome for that topic (the endish area of course). good idea. What about all those fifties songs about cars, and the Beach Boys, and American Graffiti, and i don't know what else.

yeah, they're canadian but they're still part of american culture. kinda like u2. blame globalization, man!

I figure cars = escape, wealth, destruction. It's cyclical.

Babbitt, by Sinclair Lewis, has some excellent quotes about the place of cars in american culture. It was published in 1922, might serve as a good place to start basing things off of. Also, Bernie taught it for Modern American Fiction.

Anyway, good luck with everything.

I'll look into it-- it's one of the ones I didn't read for M.A.F.

Good luck to you too! I hope I see you or your published poetry sometime soon.

All of Being There is worth listening to any time. I've listened to that album over and over the last few months.

more cars: "Cruel Intentions," tour vans/busses --> the deaths of buddy holly et. al. and of course the tour bus crash that killed metallica's bassist cliff burton, Keith Moon drives a Rolls Royce into a swimming pool, the blues brothers --> their cruiser that falls apart and the flying pinto scene, the idea of the car as an erogenous zone a la "Grease" or even pete and pete.

there's deff a thesis in those there hills

Have you seen Of Montreal's performance of Heimdalsgate on Conan O'Brien? (I think it was Conan O'Brien...)

Kevin Barnes does all of the major costume changes live while playing the song.

It's so good! And there's the guy in the back at the end just waving tentacles around while smiling/frowning.
