The vedas actually believe that not only does one choose the nature of their own existence prior to being born, but in fact the circumstances of it. The notion is that outside of this physical plane, you meet in light and love with every soul with who you will share an encounter in this life, and you both mutually agree to teach one another whatever you will both learn from each other, respectively. It's a beautiful concept, which teaches one to be grateful even for struggles, and those who harm us.
But I really appreciate this perspective, too, and happy for whatever lets you be you.
