John and great vs. good

Papa Winchester continues to be a driving force in both of his sons' lives.  Here's my take after digesting On the Head of a Pin (so be warned for spoilers through that episode)

This was wonderful. I'd like to comment more later because I have so many thoughts from this.

One thought struck me while reading this was the visual of Sam leaving newly ressurected Dean while he slept throughout the season. I wonder if this was a visual clue of how similar to John, Sam was becoming.

Thank you, this was very moving analysis and prompted me to post.

Thanks for the nice words! I do think Sam leaving Dean while he slept was another indication of how John-like he was becoming - solitary, the protector rather than the partner.

Thank you! I'll always have hope for those boys until the credits roll for the series finale.

Maybe the story of Supernatural will ultimately be the story of two sons who grow up to learn from their father’s mistakes just as much as they learned from his life.

Oh, definitely. This is a great summation of John's lasting influence on the boys. Thanks for sharing:)

It's lovely when a TV show remembers that people don't just vanish from heart and mind after they die...

Oh, that penultimate paragraph is exactly what I needed to read. Thank you so much!

I'm glad to hear it! Dean can only find peace when he realizes he shouldn't compare himself to his dad and that the people in his life who care about him don't think he should be any more like his dad than he already is naturally.

He’s only been on screen for a total of nine episodes (and only about half of those were more than one or two scenes), died at the beginning of season two, and hasn’t been seen since the end of the same season; but the impression he’s left on the show easily makes him Eric Kripke’s greatest creation, if not one of the top 100 television characters of all time.

What a great opening. It's funny that you should post this now because I was having some similar thoughts myself, but I'm not sure how much I have left to say after reading this!

I quite like how you contrast Sam's aftermath with John's.

Sam didn’t share his whole life with her, not like he did with Dean and not like John did with Mary.

An interesting comparison would be John with Jessica, since it was Mary who hid parts of her life from John.

in both cases it was what most likely what made the difference between life and death. Sam can’t forgive himself for that any more than John could.Yes, I think Sam's guilt even before Dean's death has gone largely unremarked in ( ... )

Yes, I think Sam's guilt even before Dean's death has gone largely unremarked in the series compared to his desperation.

I hope all of those feelings come out soon! As much as I love Dean I'm a Sam girl all the way and I'm dying to see those emotions finally coming to the surface.

Man, what a fascinating story that would be if Mary had come back at some point, especially if she had baggage the way Dean does.

Agreed, 100 percent. There's no doubt in my mind it would play out very similarly to how things have played out between Sam and Dean this season.
