please leave a mess

Ok so its a new year. I don't think Ive been making resolutions for some time now, so I'm not going to start now. That said, I have about $600 in my bank account right now and I'm looking to keep my balance in the three digit range (or even, gasp, HIGHER?) for the rest of the year ( Read more... )

pretty much every time i see an intriguing movie (whether i like it or not), i then rush home (or to the computer, if i'm watching a netflix dvd!) and log on to my school's databases to see if there is any criticism written on it. almost every time the author will begin by discussing the "hype" or "debate" surrounding the film. i often am left wondering where all these controversies happen. i think it's a rhetorical device to prove one is about to provide the definitive interpretation and end the darn controversy once and for all, but i wish they would just say "on this one messageboard i googled, a bunch of teenage boys debated the film" or "hanging out with five pointy-headed academics in the lounge the other day, there was a fiery conversation about the film."

ha, I think you make a good point about it being a device and little more.

it makes you wonder though, you'd think most reviewers would be smart enough to realize that most "hype" around movies is either a: manipulated by the film industry or b: propagated by ideologues with an axe to grind.

We need to hang in the new year. Sometimes I think about how I've only seen you twice since I moved here and it makes me sad.

interesting. i'm reading Snow by Orhan Pamuk, the Turkish writer on trial for, basically, "sedition" in turkey right now. So far, so good.

The hype is in celebrity mags and websites. There's hype about Heath getting Oscar nods and Jake not. There's hype about Jake being secretly gay and his relationships are farces. There's hype about Heath and the girl from Dawson's Creek having a kid...and then there's the controversial stuff.

"Hype"=amount of gossip generated by actors in the film

keara and i also saw brokeback mountain last night. i think it's weird that it was sold out at every show and that we had to sit in the very front because we arrived just after the previews. i thought the film was good, but i didn't see anything special about it. i also thought the characters' relationship was way underdeveloped. i also thought there were too many boobs in the movie.

when was the last time i saw you, man?

yeah, i agree that all of the relationships were pretty flat. for some reason, i didnt mind. the film seemed to have a pretty well-established purpose, and I think it captured that.

its been forever. ive been a hermit. we need a movie night!

yeah i've been a hermit, too. we sure do. i still haven't brought myself to watch come and see. i think it's because i am too scared to watch it alone.

they did "age" well. except that last scene by the trucks in the mountains where jake was standing and moving so much like a guy in his twenties that it was distracting. this was a wonderful movie and in none of the ways i was expecting.
