I have an account over there but found it was just duplicating LJ. Unless everyone I know moves over there, I'll just stay here. After ten years here I'd need some serious motivation to overcome the inertia. :)
I have dreamwidth as backup and use LJ Archive as actual backup (just have to remember to open it and synch it. I also use LJ Book for making PDFs, but that's a once a year activity.
After the DDoS attacks last time, I realized that I'm a very unhappy camper if I don't have an outlet for my ramblings!! I certainly wouldn't use FB as a backup. LJ is the primary place but DW is for "just in case".
Have one, don't use it.penkMay 26 2011, 16:37:37 UTC
Dreamwidth suffers from the same problem competitors to eBay had. You go where all your friends go. I suspect ther'ell be whole cliches that are DW-only, but we're pretty well entrenched here on LJ, and IMHO LJ hasn't jumped the shark badly enough to warrant wholesale abandonment.
I gave up my paid account at LJ and switched over to a paid account at DW mostly in a "voting with my dollars" kind of way. I've been unhappy with how LJ has been handled since Our New Russian Overlords bought it, and I suspect the DDOS attacks and such are just going to continue to get worse. Eventually it just boiled down to "I don't want to give these people my money any more, I want to give it to these other people instead."
It's true that it suffers from the "all my friends are over there [LJ]" problem but I figured if I can be part of moving the center of gravity in DW's direction, it doesn't hurt me to do so :)
