Mortari and I had a discussion awhile ago about wing!fic, and given that it's a theme that I know a lot of people enjoy, I thought that it'd be a good idea for an SGA recs list. I didn't actually find as many as I expected, so it's more of a mini-list at this point, but I'll update and add more as I find them.
Note: All McKay/Sheppard, all the time

An Aesthetic Solitary ThingAuthor:
eliadeRating: NC-17
Length: ~6,400 words
Genre: Humor, transformation, kink, first-time
Summary: When Rodney starts exhibiting strange symptoms, Dr. Beckett discovers something odd about his genetic makeup. Now Rodney must find a mate -- before his alien side chooses for him. Warnings: wingfic, tentacles.
This is a fic with a very interesting premise that I enjoyed immensely. The basic idea is that Rodney isn't actually human, but an alien pretending to be human (not a species we've seen in the Stargate universe before), and one day on Atlantis he starts to experience some physical changes (which is where the wings come in). It was originally written for the
Badfic Summary challenge, hence the...interesting summary, but while it's crack!fic it's definitely not bad!fic. As a warning, it does get sexually explicit towards the end, after Rodney's body changes, so as you read and hear the changes described, keep in mind your own tolerance for reading about him having sex in that form.
"Taller--or, longer, depending on your perspective. More arms, commonly four to six, though they're not arms per se. More like tentacles. Much more hair, all over. I suppose you could call it fur. Legs, two, but there's also a broad fanlike appendage, like a tail. Facially--" He broke off, catching John's unguarded expression. "That enough?"
"Sorry," John said. "I guess I expected you'd look more..."
"Human. I know." He sighed. "At least we're not giant flatworms."

Some Things Are Better With WingsSummary: Wings! UST! Gratuitous touching! An extremely cheerful magician! All this, and also Zelenka. (The non-insane version? John and Rodney get what they really want.)
This is a delightfully funny fic where John and Rodney are both given their heart's desire. Or, rather, they're given what they need in order to get their heart's desire, which is not quite the same thing. John gets a beautiful set of jet-black wings that have an...interesting effect on him when they're touched. Rodney, on the other hand, ends up being unable to get further than 20 feet away from John, or else they both feel ill. The magician that causes this is absolutely adorable, and I loved the description of the "McKay balloon." A fun read all around.
Art:
Mortari did a
manipulation inspired by the story, showing John's black feathered wings and Rodney's skepticism about said wings. Both John's and Rodney's expressions are perfect.
It worked, which was really not so surprising since Rodney was involved in the project. Ten minutes later though, being dragged like a particularly plump and protesting comet tail through the air above Atlantis, Rodney was beginning to wish he wasn't a genius.
"Slow DOWN!" he yelled at John, who was executing a perfect loop-the-loop ahead of him. John waved back at him, folded his wings and went into freefall. It was like being on the most horrific rollercoaster ever invented.
"I think I'm going to throw up," Rodney told a passing cloud.

When Moored to the SkyAuthor:
rinsbaneRating: NC-17
Length: ~14,000 words
Genre: Angst, transformation, first-time
Summary: In which Rodney gets wings. Because I was reading SGA wingfic and thought, hey, why's it usually, though not always, John who gets the wings? If Rodney got them, John would be So. Jealous.
A lovely fic, with really nice characterizations. How Rodney felt about his wings, frustrated and feeling like his body wasn't his own anymore, was very well-done and reminded me of how the issue of body image is often dealt with in good gender!fuck fic. John of course would get jealous, but not really be able to figure out exactly what he was jealous of. ::pets oblivious!John:: The discussion about what mythology his wings were from was delightful, and it was interesting to see a description of non-feathered wings. And I love the mental image of Rodney using his wings to gesture when flailing his hands just isn't quite enough. Also, the sex scene is very hot.
He wants to know when the whole science team, or at least the physics people, got to see Rodney’s wings. Why they got to see them and he didn’t. What color they are and what they feel like, and if Rodney can fly with them. He opens his mouth to ask if Rodney will show them to him and then snaps it shut because he realizes that that’s not what was going to come out at all. More like he was going to say, "Why did you show them and not me?" and when he looked in the mirror this morning as he brushed his teeth, he definitely saw a 40-year old man there so when did he become a teenage girl?

The Rise and FallAuthor:
trinityofoneRating: PG // NC-17 // PG
Length: ~850 words // ~1,400 words // ~2,100 words
Genre: Angst, transformation
Summary: Yea, he did fly upon the wings of the wind.
I don't usually rec an entire series together, but I think these three really do need to be read together to get the full effect. During the course of the series, both John and Rodney get wings, and it's so interesting to see the differences in how they react. I think both were spot-on, but I particularly liked Rodney's behavior and how annoyed he was that everyone else expected him to behave like John. The last fic ends on a lovely and sweet mental image.
Carson assures him that they’re still working on a way to fix the problem. Halfway through this speech he stops, stares John in the face. Sees his wind-mussed hair and his wind-flushed cheeks. “I’ll...I’ll not make it a priority, then,” he says, and John’s grin is genuine; his thank you even more so.

I've also included a non-fic-related piece of art, because it's just that amazing.

Ironic Wing!ArtArtist:
crysothemisPairing: Gen (though I happen to think that John's smirking at an off-stage Rodney)
Rating: PG
Medium: Pencil
Although the artist claims to not like wing!fic/art (hence the ironic title), this is a gorgeous portrayal of a shirtless John with feathered wings. As much as I love the wings (which OMG I love), his expression and stance may be my favorite part, because he's still all smirky and slouchy. Just, you know, with wings.
