Death Note US remake?

I don't watch/read Death Note, but for those of you that do (and I know there are several people on my flist that do):

I am kind of worried that it sounds like they picked up some white writers to adapt it. It could be an amazing movie. If they got a really awesome director, they could do an awesome film with Asian men killing a bunch of white people who really deserved to get it. Like a scene with a well known old American white man getting water-boarded to death. Or it would be interesting with a Filipino-American actor acting against the dominant narrative of colonization!

Suffice to say, the movie I would make off of death note would get me shipped off to Guantanamo.
