A tiny freehand drabble, post-Maelstrom, pre-TSAR. Raw, no beta unexpurgated (my dearest wisteria_ performed a lightning beta, i.e. "go post it" - all remaining flaws are my fault), there it is.
I love how quiet this story is, how quiet Lee's grief is in it.
all the space left to mourn Kara The combination of that line followed by the difficulty of replacing helmets really got to me. There's no time for them to deal with loss, to heal the missing parts of themselves.
I feel so sad for Lee. There's no private place for him to grieve - everywhere he goes people look to him for cues. Even in his own quarters he has to keep up appearances. (I actually think Dee would be gracious enough not to comment on his grief, but he wouldn't want to burden her by crying on her shoulder, either.)
So quietly beautiful and sorrowful this is. Elegiac is the word the comes to mind. I like the way you allow Lee his little bit of private time, but then pull him into the vigil, where he can know he's not alone in his grief.
Oh, Lee. Poor Lee. The communal mourning doesn't begin to cover the scope of his loss, but the other pilots at least understand better than most what's been taken from them.
Much as I would have enjoyed sobbing over Kara's memorial service, I'm glad the show chose to give us the moments afterwards, the way that grief continues to hit each person after the public displays are over. I like to think that the pilots collude to give their CAG some space and time to mourn, whether he realizes it or not.
Oh, Lee. I just want to give him a hug. He's so busy looking after other people and maintaining a brave front, he's left no room to be kind to himself.
