No, you're not the only one who is worried about the current situation. Because I could actually see Derek leaving for less money if one of these offers more years. I don't think he gives a crap about the cash aspect, or at least it isn't as important as the years offered.
But yeah, if one of these offered 4/$50m over the Yankees 3/$45, I could definitely see him leaving. It's not like he actually *needs* the Yankees now. Derek Jeter is a brand of his own and all of those teams have enough draw that he'd still be worth a fortune in endorsements.
So could I. I don't think he cares about the cash aspect either. I understand that the Yankees are trying to sign Cliff Lee (even though I don't reall want him), but what I'm afraid of is that they'll be so concerned with him, that they'll mess around with Derek and he'll wind up leaving.
The Mets have said there is "no chance" they sign Jeter (they barely have the money to pay their own team), the Dodgers are in a similar situation, and Jimmy Rollins plays in Philadelphia. I think the only one you have to worry about is Boston, and I cannot see that happening. Theo wouldn't give Victor Martinez four years; I highly doubt he'll give Jeter the years/money he wants. The only way I see him leaving the NYY is if Cashman/the Yankees lowball him enough to seriously piss him off and make him not WANT to return.
I still say he'll be a Yankee in 2011, somehow. They'll get it worked out.
Yeah, I see what you mean there. I'm not really sure, but who's playing shortstop for the Mets anyway? That's what I'm afraid they'll do. I hope they'll get it worked out too. I just don't how they'll do it.
As much as you don't want to see Jeter as a Red Sox, I don't want to see him as a Red Sox. I don't think you have to worry about him abandoning ship for us. Plus, we have Marco Scutaro and Jed Lowrie. Okay, neither of them are Jeter, but they've invested a lot in Lowrie.
Well, I don't mean as far as the Red sox. I'm talking about just going to other teams in general. These were the pictures they had in the New York Daily news (though I don't completely trust them since they're not always a reliable source). Even though I know Cashman has a tendency to play lowball, I don't think the Yankees or Epstein would be stupid enough to have Derek go to the Red Sox. Just asking in curiosity, how long is Scutaro signed for?
Well none of those are gonna happen - Sox have Scutaro, Mets Reyes, Dodgers Furcal, and Phillies Rollins (plus the Mets and Dodgers are, like, broke). I know it looks ugly but it all comes down to the fact that Cashman, as much as I dislike the negotiations being public, is right. There isn't another team out there that would offer him even 3/$45, and I think he ends up getting more either in years or money (I hope it's money but that's irrelevant). Both sides need each other. I think this ends up working out just fine and we'll all forget about it by Spring Training.
Well, the pictures came from the New York Daily news. I don't like the negotiations either. Especially with the fact that Cashman offered Derek to test the free-agent waters and that the Yankees are pursuing Cliff Lee. I hope all of this works out for the best, too
