Of course, I'm speaking of New Zealand marmite, which is different to English marmite. I'm not so fond of English marmite.

OK now you've got my attention. In what way does it differ?

Well, there's difference of opinions on that too! And it's not helped by the fact that a lot of people seem to have confused New Zealand marmite with Vegemite (which is Australian, and another thing entirely...)

I think New Zealand marmite is stronger tasting than English marmite, and it has a different texture; it's more of a paste, less of the gooey honey-like consistency that English marmite has. It is also much darker in colour, almost black.

To me English marmite tastes more like vegemite, but having a honey-like consistency. New Zealand marmite tastes and looks more like Bovril. Although it's vegetarian - made from yeast extract.

See, my brain has been insisting to me that UK Marmite *used* to be darker & thicker. But I don't know if that's just in my imagination.

I'm still in mourning for Unilever's withdrawn vegan Bovril. So fucking good, and I completely failed to stock up because I never realised they'd be taking it away! Only half a jar left now :-(

You forgot "it'll do when there's no Vegemite."

I've tried Vegemite but it seems like Marmite that's been watered down a bit plus I find the taste worryingly plasticky.

I hope you and I can still be friends.

Funny, I thought marmite tasted like vegemite that had been watered down. Perhaps we pick out different parts of the taste.

I reckon it's conditioning when we're young'uns. The Spreadable Yeast Extract Flavour Brigades set up fortifications on our taste buds and refuse to budge.

I'm trying to get hold of some more XO for my dad in France. There you go: whole family loves it.

Vegemite on the other-hand, I love!

Eww. My NZ subtenants left a jar of Vegemite in my cupboard. I tried it for the first time, immediately threw it away and bought some more Marmite.

Snowflake.

Contrary to the advertising claims, I have no strong feelings about Marmite. Give me a bit on toast and I might just eat it. But I'd probably not much care if I never had it again.
