I can fully understand the desire to keep the Presidency and Congress controlled by opposite parties, but you can't forget the Supreme Court. Odds are that the next president will get to pick one and maybe two new judges. Given that the court is already leaning conservative, McCain as president could firmly shift it into that camp. That may or may not be an issue for you.
Oh, and the chance that Palin could become president does scare the shit out of me, much more so than the possible damage Obama might do with a democratic Congress.

The Supreme Court is an issue for me. The general consensus is, barring any tragic accidents, the next SC retiree will most likely be one of the more liberal justices. Sen. Obama would replace a liberal justice with another, Sen. McCain would replace a liberal justice with...one that could make it through confirmation? Another squish like Justice Kennedy? While I'd like to see another strict originalist on the court, Sen McCain is too much of a get along type of guy to put up a fight over that type of justice.

The confirmation hearings would limit his options somewhat, although the scuttlebutt has been that he more or less promised the religious right a social conservative on the bench. He would have a tough time getting that past a Democrat Congress though. I'm on the pro-choice side of the abortion debate, so I really don't want to see it overturned, mostly because I think it might tear this country apart if abortion becomes a state issue.
